Obviously it is very early in the season, but the Clippers look legit. Playing without one of their stars in Paul George to begin the season is not easy but the Clips have done that with ease. After handling the new look Lakers, Kawhi and company unleashed on a rather rundown Golden State squad. While they played sloppily against the Suns, if you are a Clippers fan there are many reasons to be excited for this upcoming season.
1. Kawhi Leonard is in his prime
After having his best season last year with the Raptors in which Kawhi averaged a career high points per game (26.6), rebounds per game (7.3), and assists per game (3.3), it is clear that at the age of 28 he is only beginning what will be known as the prime of his career. The Clippers organization capitalized on the perfect opportunity for the next three years where Leonard should be at his peak performance of his career. After all, last season Kawhi took a bunch of solid but limited players and won the NBA Finals; imagine what he can do with the assets that surround him now in LA. Don’t be surprised if at the end of the year he is holding up the NBA MVP award because he certainly has the skillset to get it done.
2. Lets not forget about Paul George
George is expected to be out another 3 weeks rehabbing his shoulder injury making his return timeline sometime early to mid November. Let’s not forget that he was playing unstoppable before he suffered the shoulder injury during the season averaging 28.7 points per game and shooting 40.3 percent from beyond the arc. When healthy he is an all NBA player who’s style and size allow him to stretch the floor. Now take his talents and pair him with skillset that Kawhi has and it creates a duo that will be unstoppable when both are playing at one hundred percent.
3. The supporting cast
Montrezl Harrell, Lou Williams, Patrick Beverley, Landry Shamet, Marice Harkless, Patrick Patterson, and JaMychal Green have all had a fantastic start to the season and there is no reason that will stop anytime soon. The chemistry been Harrell and Williams is running at a top notch pace with the pick and roll game in smooth control. At this point Lou Williams deserves the 6th man award every year as he consistently puts up near 20 points per game. Not only does this supporting cast have the ability to score but Patrick Beverly’s tenacious defense alongside the big bodies of Harkless, Patterson, Green, and Harrell creates nightmares for opponents to gameplay against. The pieces to this team are all together and it will be up to coaching and execution, which shouldn’t be a problem under the legendary Doc Rivers, to live up to the expectations they have created for themselves.
